GEOGRAPHY
- A glacial valley in the middle of the Alps.
Valtellina is home to 1000 hectares of NebbioloEnclosed to the north by the Rhaetian Alps and to the south by the Orobie Alps, Valtellina runs from east to west for 50 km. The two sides of the mountain, exposed respectively to the NORTH and to the SOUTH, enjoy profoundly different lighting.Pushed to the surface by the movement of tectonic plates, which millions of years ago formed the Alpine chain, many different rocks go to variegate the composition of the soil, making each small plot unique. - The valley's orientation from EAST to WEST, the sunny exposure, the protection of the mountains and the proximity to the Como Lake contribute to a unique climatic situation. In a vineyard area that extends from 350 to 800 m above sea level there are 3 distinct climatic zones - each one correspond to different characteristics of the grapes at each altitude level.
- 2500km of thousand-year-old dry stone walls sculpt a steep and rocky slope, allowing the farmers to work an hostile mountain.
The art of terracing is recognized as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.In addition to its immense historical and cultural value, the terrace system is an extremely functional work of engineering and architecture for viticulture at any time of the year.
